Shedding square footage?

Updated: Jul 5, 2021

When was the last time you went smaller? In your living space.

If I was to reflect on all the places I have laid my head to rest at the end of the day, I'd have to start at the beginning, one of the smallest spaces.

OK, maybe not that far back but maybe my very childhood home. It was a moderate sized home.

Once I was out of the house and in college, goal was to leave the confines of a cramped dorm room and go big.

When I started to save enough money, I had my eyes set on owning my own home. It wasn't until I was in my early 30's I was able to buy a townhouse. It was roughly 1800 sq. ft. and it was a mansion.

As time went on and as my immediate family grew (husband, dog, twins, nanny) so did the size of our homes. Funny how that works.

By 2014, our twins were in high school and we were living in a 6000 sq. ft home. How did that happen? Why do we have this much space? Are we even using it all?

This was also the year that my husband and I were thinking about our soon to be life as empty nesters. Three more years and the kids would both be in college. We did not need to rattle around a 6000 sq. ft. home. So we did what we always do, we started to dream of whats next. Next became put the house on the market and downsize.

We found a beautiful new modern home, 3300 sq. ft. Still a good size, but half the size of our current. Kids were a bit shocked. Same school, so no worries there, but kids like routines and dislike change. We thought this could serve as a life lesson! The one thing that remains constant, is change.

So we sold off about 3000 sq. ft. worth of furniture and assorted other stuff and moved into the home we have lived in for the last 5 years.

Until.

Until, our next dream came along.

I have always wanted to live in a warm climate, feet in sand, sunsets and sundowners.

Luckily my husband, after 13 years in the Pacific North West (think rain) was ready to dream this dream too.

Kids are in college, living their best lives, wasn't it time for us to do the same?

This July, we put our beautiful modern home on the market, sold it in 3 days and moved into a 1043 sq. ft. condo until we pack it all up and move to West Palm Beach.

Once again we sold off whatever we didn't think we'd use in the home we hadn't even found yet in Palm Beach. Movers came, backed what was left up and off it all went to Florida.

The story comes full circle.

My husband and I are living in a 2 bedroom 2 bath condo, right above my Pilates studio and in walking distance to everything we need. We brought a couch, a few pillows, our 2 fiddle leaf fig plants, crazy Larry (you'll have to go to my IG account to see that post).

Went to HomeGoods and Target for a couple of inexpensive things to dress the place up.

1043 sq. ft. and loving it!

Check out some of my favorite things when going small.
